Here’s a sneak-peek at the latest offering from Emotion Kayaks, just in time for cooler weather.
This is the “Edge 9.8”, shown here in the Angler version. This is one of the first ones to pop out of the mold. Lime green won’t be one of the standard colors, but here are some specifics:
Length: 9’ 8” Width: 28” Weight: 39 lbs. Capacity: 300-350 lbs (est). Seat: Integrated, padded, included. Availability: Mid November … PRICE: $379 for the stock version, $449 for the Angler version.
Once I get mine, I’ll post more pictures (before, during, and after rigging). Until then, here’s a taste …
Looks like a neat little yak. Like the idea of a sealed bulkhead on the angler version. Only other question is if you know, how is the draft on it? It looks like more of a lake and pond boat with the bottom design, but wondering if it will work on shallow rivers and streams.

I would think it would be equally at home on shallow rivers/steams, but only a demo will tell. I can't wait to get my butt in one so I can put it through the paces ...
Lets see leaves on the water denotes Cold water. Whats missing Here Never post a bad Example, of safe Kayaking, It can hurt , And from what I see of that Kayak , It would not be a good fishing kayak, maybe on Calm lakes and ponds, Thats my Experiance and Opinion, with Sit In Sides. Its to small & Short to be Effective for a SIS fishing Yak, It would not be a Choice of Mine. Not even in the running, for Raritan Bay,and ocean fishing, or even Roundvalley, or manasquan Res. And i just switched to a SOT, But I have issues with them To, Like a Wet Butt all day and exposure, Plus Cargo room for My STUFF, But my T120 is great For what i use it for. My Dager Edisto, And My WS. Pemlico Excell With Motor Power and many comforts of home Have there Place also , But do what Floats you Boat and have fun and be safe, BillW

Granted, this boat won't be all things to all people (stay tuned for more boats next year ..), but your comment about safety perked my interest. Please explain why you don't think this would be a safe ride.
For me, down here in the frozen tundra of Florida, I can see it getting a good bit of water time this winter. For me though, it will only see grass flats no more than 4 feet deep and I'll be able to paddle out, catch fish, and still see my truck.
I sat in one the last time I was at Emotion. Nice little yak. If one is in the market for a small SIK, its a good one. We'll probably keep a few around when the season comes.
Yes Em has some great new colors. I saw purple and orange.
Length: 9' 8" Width: 29" Weight: 37 lbs. Capacity: 275 to 350 lbs (*** depending on water conditions ***) Cockpit opening: 21" x 51" Colors:
"The Edge" is the first in a series of hard chined closed deck recreational kayaks coming from Emotion.
This kayak has a peaked foredeck and bow wave deflector - these 2 features work together to deflect and shed water, keeping the paddler as dry as possible.
It comes with an integrated dual density foam seat, light, comfy, and adjustable.
It features a "Quadra-plane" hull designed for excellent performance and instinctive stability.
Spray skirt and cockpit covers also available !
"The Edge" in review …
EASE OF USE: I normally fish from a 65 pound, 14 foot sit_on_top kayak, so loading and unloading this little 37 pound boat was effortless. Having the seat already installed just means one less thing to do before I can go paddling. Getting in it was certainly different than boarding a SOT, but since there is plenty of room in the cockpit opening, it was fairly easy. I quickly fell in love with the dry ride. So, I'll be more inclined to take this boat out when it's cold.
HANDLING: I mainly use my kayaks to fish from - my favorite lure (this week) is a top water plug. I fully expected this kayak to behave like a 9 foot Skitterwalk, nosing side to side as I paddled, requiring lots of corrective strokes. My assumption couldn't have been farther from the truth. It paddled VERY straight. However, since it's short, you could spin it around on a dime, with change left over. It's definitely a responsive little boat, and I found myself putting down my rod so I could just go paddle it … imagine that.
SPEED: It paddled VERY fast - it absolutely blistered through the water. I didn't have my handheld GPS with me, but I was definitely able to cover more water quicker than any kayak I've ever paddled.
STABILITY: I'm a SOT guy, so I really didn't quite know what to expect from a cockpit boat, let alone a short one. I assumed that since I was seated at the waterline instead of above it that it would have the initial stability of a park bench - it did. My surprise came in the secondary stability. I guess this is just that 'quadra-plane' hull strutting its stuff, but as you lean to a side the boat leans with you slightly, then stops. Once you test this feature a few times you really start to trust the boat. Once I made friends with the characteristics of this boat I had no worries turning around to get to my rods, or reaching forward to get to my fishing tackle.
FISHING: Finally, let's talk fishing ! This little boat encourages you to take what you NEED. I take 2 rods, a TALS bag, and a small soft sided cooler. In time, I'll add an anchor trolley, but for now I simply put a carabineer through the pad eye holding the rear handle and then run the anchor line through that. I can then raise and lower the anchor from the cockpit, tying it off to the paddle keeper as needed. I had to adjust my cast/retrieve a bit due to being in a cockpit as opposed to being on a SOT, but the adjustment was minimal – the results were the same. Fighting and landing fish was no issue. My lip gripper and pliers were handy (as was my camera) so catch and release was easy (well, at least the release part was …).
OPTIONS: The standard Edge will come in all the colors listed above, the Angler Edge will be available in yellow, green, and sand. In addition, the Angler will have 2 flush mount rod holders (similar to what was shown on mine) and a paddle keeper. Note: The paddle keeper on the Angler model will be a bungee type, similar to the one found on the Emotion Fisherman (and will be much more functional than the one I added to mine). There's also room on the rear deck for either the 8" or 10" Emotion hatch.
MORE INFO: I’m enclosing some pictures of the standard and Angler versions. If you have any questions or would like to see more pictures, feel free to drop me a line at emotion_fl@yahoo.com.
Its hard to resist saying the edge is a "cutie" . It looks like the hatch would be optional - would it have a bag or just have access to the space behind the seat? Also is it possible to put the seat back down to get behind it for storage? Also looks like no sealed bulkhead in the rear on the angler version. Looks like you'll give the small sit ins like Swifties and Loons, etc. some good competition with that design... Fishnmusicn

You can put the 10" hatch on the rear deck, with a bag or with the hard bucket. And, that will also allow you to store small items under the deck. The back band of the seat can be removed to gain access back there as well - there is no sealed bulkhead.
This Saturday, the weather here in my part of Florida will be Chamber Of Commerce gorgeous, so I'll be keeping it out all day.
