I didn't have any heavy fishing line so I used weed eater string, works great. Used some kevlar fly tying tread to form the loops. Thanks for the tip.

What did he use to close those loops up? I've seen people used some kind of metal to pinch the two together. What are those called?

It is a Leader Sleeve it needs to be sized for the size line you want to use. It also looks like it was crimped using the appropriate tools making it nice and clean.
