That little yellow thing is a small balloon. I tie it to my mainline to keep my bait at a predetermined depth.
Then I let out about 30 to 40 feet of line to let the bait get away from the kayak. I tie it on tight enough to hold the bait up, but not tight enough to keep from reeling the line back through it.

Luna, yep, she got mad because I didn't leave the bait tank for her and instead paddled over to get video of Pun's catch. Of course, she was in a lot of pain from her back out there too so it didn't take much. All is well (was that day afterward too).
