Anyone heard anything about this yak. Sports Authority is carrying this kayak. Looks like a great kayak. Has storage, 3 rod holders, built in seat, etc. All for 469.00. Very interested, but don't know how it will paddle.

Bill,

No idea how the boats perform. I looked at their site, http://www.pelican-intl.com no Castaway listed.

You might want to look around at other boats and purchase a non-angler boat. Outfit the boat with the rod holders you want, place where you wnt, etc.

Go Red Sox!

Still waiting. The dealer was a little optimistic when I would get it. I talked to him last week and it should be in anyday. I am taking it out on the lake as soon as I get it. I'll send my opinion shortly after.

Billy,
I got the castaway. This is my first kayak that I have purchased so I don't really have much to compare it to for any length of comparison. It is heavy, but I plan to be on the water so no big deal. Tracks pretty good but needs a longer paddle. The swivel rod holder is good but the other two are useless to me. I plan to fish ponds, lakes and rivers so I only need the swivel holder. I have seen reviews about the hatch not being very good but I have had no problems. Just make sure it is secure. It moves very easily and seems pretty fast. I like it and it is great for the price. I'm taking it to central Texas on the Llano river this summer, I hope it handles the rapids well.

well, for around that price you could get the heritage featherlite angler, which i have , but it is a sit in kayak, and depending on what kind of day it is iut on the water, i prefer the featherlite angler much more on a smoother day, its just a more cozy and a very stable ride too, you might want to look into it.

I haven't seen any further info on the Castaway. Just wondering if the great price means it doesn't compare to a Prowler or Tarpon? Hard to tell without jumping in one!

Doesn't sound like a great deal (price). A friend bought one at Sports Authority when they were running the Friends and Family 25% discount. Regular $469 less 25% plus TX Sales Tax. Drive out price was around $375. In the case of Target $399 plus $199 shipping (per their website) plus sales tax equals about $627.

As far as performance, he has been using it the past few weekends and made the comment that it's a bit slow compared to others and it is pretty wet as it won't drain low via the scuppers.

I'm new as well but just passing on what his comments were.

Heavier plastic, poorer design, equals Junk. Take your time and shop used for a proven design if you want to save money and have a decent yak. My 2 cents -

Bought this kayak 3 months ago and have had it out on the water every Saturday since. It is the first and only kayak that I have owned. Got it at Dick's sporting goods for $449+tx.
I'm 5'8" 165lbs. I cart it about 300yds to a mid sized lake where I live. A friend and I then paddle about 1 mile to where we fish.

-Weight 62lbs at 11.5ft sucks.
-tracking is decent but probably nothing like what you'd get w/say the Prowler or Tarpons.
-storage in this boat is nice.
-one (cheap) swivel rod holder up front and two in the back that I rarely use(I've got pvc holders in my milk crate instead)
-paddle strapdowns are on both sides and are nice.
-stability seems to be good.
-the cockpit is nice and wide but the cup holder is a joke(much too shallow).
-no scupper holes behind the seat...I end up setting in water sometimes.
-there's really no flat areas to mount anything up front although I have managed to get a depth finder just in front of the swivel rod holder.

The biggest problem I have with this kayak is how hot the plastic gets. My buddy has a Charger that he fishes out of and in the afternoon while the Charger's plastic may at most be warm, the Castaway gets hot. It'll burn my hands/legs if I don't splash water on it before setting side-saddle!
Time will tell how this boat holds up to wear and tear as well as the elements.

My plan is to buy a Prowler13 or Emotion Fisherman in the next couple of months so I'll have something for comparison then. I'm not buying the prowler b/c I don't like the Castaway. Just want to have an extra boat available so that others can go out w/me from time to time.

I was in Dick's Sporting Goods, and saw one on layaway. I tried to pick it up and couldn't. I got my lemon yellow, T120 across the street at EMS, (Eastern Mountain Sports), on sale for $400! Eek It came w/ 3lb. anchor, scotty rod holder base up front, two flush-mount behind. You know I jumped! Not Worthy

Hey Billy,
Welcome to the site! Didn't know SA in Tally was carrying these, but I may have to go down and check it out.
